Lisa Marie (Tolman) von Biela ’80 graduated with a BS in Biology. She is thrilled to announce that her second novel, a medical thriller entitled The Janus Legacy, was just released. Martin Donohoe ’84, MD ’90 has recently published a reader for Jossey-Bass entitled Public Health and Social Justice.  He also maintains the website Public Health & Social Justice, where his numerous radio and TV appearances have been documented.  Dr. Donohoe currently serves as a senior physician for Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center and Adjunct Associate Professor for the Portland State University School of Community Health.

Donald A. Harn PhD ’80

Donald A. Harn PhD ’80 did his postdoctoral work at Harvard University and served for 24 years as a faculty member for the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health.  He recently moved his group to the University of Georgia where they “are employing bioinformatics to determine the activation pathways and immune mediators induced by LNFPIII, in conjunction with knockdown, loss of function studies to discover new anti-inflammatory and anti-retroviral reagents.” (http://www.vet.uga.edu/id/people/harn.html)

genesis_code-book coverLisa (Tolman) von Biela ’80 graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2009 and is currently a civil legal aid attorney in Seattle.  She has served on the editorial board of the American Bar Association’s The SciTech Lawyer since 2009.  She is very excited to report that her debut novel, a biotech technothriller entitled The Genesis Code, will be released in May 2013 in paperback, digital, and limited edition signed hardcover.  Lisa is already working on her second novel, The Janus Legacy.

21_Alum_MarinaKhubesrianFrom The Armenian Reporter, December 16th, 2011: Marina Khubesrian ’89, MD ’92 took the oath of office as a new City Council member at South Pasadena’s City Council meeting on December 7th, 2011.  She has served as the medical director of the Glendale Adventist Alcohol and Drug Services (GAADS) and is the associate director of the Family Medicine Residency Program.  Her private practice is now in Montrose where she specializes in Family Medicine.

Michael FokMichael Fok ’89 is a twenty-plus year employee with Merck & Co., where he works in respiratory care as a Health Science Team Leader on the East Coast. He has completed the Executive Program in Healthcare Marketing and Communications at Dartmouth College. Mike is a devoted husband and a loving father of two. In his spare time, he is a salsa instructor who also enjoys playing piano, cooking, travel and gourmet dining.

Mark Gold ’84

Mark GoldMark Gold ’84, ’86 MA, ’94 PhD (Environmental Science and Engineering), formerly President of Heal the Bay, has been appointed Associate Director for External Relations of the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. Over the past 25 years Mark Gold has worked extensively on issues of coastal protection and water issues, including pollution, and is recognized as one of California’s leading environmental opinion makers. He has served as President of Heal the Bay since 2006 and was Executive Director from 1994-2006.

Daniel Klionsky ’80

Daniel KlionskyDaniel Klionsky ’80 is Alexander G. Ruthven Professor of Life Sciences at the University of Michigan. He received his PhD in Biology in 1985 at Stanford University, and was a Helen Hay Whitney postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology. He is also Honorary Professor of the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a National Science Foundation Distinguished Teaching Scholar. His research involves autophagy and the cytoplasm to vacuole targeting pathway. In 2004, Dr. Klionsky edited the first textbook on autophagy. He helped launch the Gordon Research Conference on “Autophagy in Stress, Development and Disease,” and served as Chair in 2005. Dr. Klionsky is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Autophagy.
